The Andean Geophysical Laboratory (AGL) was founded in 1987 at the University of South Carolina to use geophysical methods to study the tectonic evolution of the Andean margin of South America.

Studies at AGL have included:

CASA: the 1988 first large GPS satellite geodetic network to measure plate motions at a convergent plate boundary (NSF and NASA funded; UNAVCO supported),

the first large GPS network in South America,

A regional gravity, magnetic, seismic study of the Eastern Cordillera and Adjacent Basins of Colombia (Colombia Geophysical Project) sponsored by 13 oil companies.

The Peru Geophysical Project to study the Subandean basins of Peru

The Bolivia Geophysical Project to study the Subandean basins of Bolivia

North Colombian Geophysical study sponsored by Ecopetrol

The Eastern Cordillera Foothills 3D seismic study sponsored by BP Colombia.

AGL students have earned 22 graduate degrees, including 17 Masters degrees and 5 PhDs. Many of the

graduates are now scientific leaders in academics, industry, and government in the US and around the world.

Since 1997, AGL has also housed the US Editorial office of the Journal of South American Earth Sciences, the premier international journal for the publication of regional Earth Science research in South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Antarctica.

In 2002, Jim Kellogg, AGL Director, helped establish the industry-funded GEGEO Program for training of geoscience and engineering students in Equatorial Guinea Africa and USC.
